Honest thoughts on life, faith, and everything in between

The Prayer Closet: Making Space for God

I’ve been on a quest to deepen my prayer life and cultivate a Christ-centered family culture. An important part of this journey has been finding a quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free space to pray. I’ve tried various spots, but nothing seemed quite right – until I remembered the movie War Room (1), where the main character transforms her closet into a prayer room.

Inspiration struck, and I decided to try out my own closet as a potential prayer den. Our master closet is a bit unconventional, with its sliding doors and deeper-than-usual space. It’s not just a closet – it’s also home to my dresser, tucked away in one corner. It gives definite entrance to Narnia vibes.

As I opened the closet doors and flipped on the light, I was greeted by a sea of hanging clothes – my husband’s flannel shirts, my Sunday best dresses, and everything in between. The floor was cluttered with a bag, a pair of cowboy boots, and a box nestled beside my dresser. But as I gazed into the closet, I felt a spark of excitement – this was it, my prayer haven.

I got to work, moving clothes, shoes, and boxes to create an open space large enough for me to sit comfortably on a cushion. As I worked, I started to ponder the metaphorical significance of this task. Just as I was physically making space for God in my closet, I am reminded of the importance of making spiritual space for Him in my life. Not just space, but first place.

What else in my life needed to be rearranged, left out, or donated to make room for God? This question lingered in my mind as I continued to create my prayer sanctuary. It’s a powerful mnemonic, just as our closets can become cluttered with physical items, our lives can become crowded with distractions that push God to the periphery.

As parents, it’s our responsibility to intentionally create a Christ-centered family culture, where God is at the center of everything we do. This requires effort and dedication (and tons of time spent in the prayer closet), but the rewards are immeasurable.

In the midst of our chaotic world, it’s easy to let the “stuff” of life – distractions, busyness, and noise – edge God out of the center. But I’m convinced that, by making intentional choices to prioritize God, we can create a legacy of faith that will impact future generations.

As I sit in my newly created “War Room”, surrounded by quiet and comfort, I’m reminded of the importance of making room for God to be center in our lives. Will you join me on this journey to Christ-centered living?
