As a Christian parent, I’m always looking for ways to keep my little ones entertained and engaged on rainy days without resorting to screens. That’s why I’ve put together this list of indoor screen-free activities that are perfect for Christian families.
Why Screen-Free Matters
As parents, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and let screens become the default entertainment option. But it’s so important that we’re intentional about what our children are learning and who their biggest influences are. By doing faith-based activities at home, we’re showing our children that God is a part of every aspect of our lives, not just something we do on Sundays.
16 Fun and Faith-Filled Activities for Rainy Days
- Storytime: Gather your little ones around for a reading of their favorite Christian books. My kids love hearing the story of David and Goliath, and we have so much fun acting it out together – they especially love doing a booming “Goliath” voice to bring the story to life! Alternatively, you can also listen to Christian podcasts or audiobooks together, such as “The Jesus Storybook Bible” or “Truth Seekers”.
- Playdoh Creations: Get creative with Playdoh and make some of the animals that were on the ark, or other creations that God made.
- Creation Station: Set up an art station with paper, glue, scissors, and other supplies and let your kids create something new and unique, just like God did in Genesis.
- Puppet Shows: Put on a puppet show and reenact your favorite Bible stories. Our family’s favorite story to reenact is Jonah and the whale. You can also try using shadow puppets for a fun and creative twist.
- Fashion Show: Host a fashion show and dress up like Joseph and his coat of many colors.
- Dance Party: Put on some of your favorite worship music and have a dance party. You can even incorporate some of the costumes from the fashion show into the dance party.
- Biblical Baking and Dinner: Plan a dinner that would have been typical in Jesus’ time, such as bread, olives, and fish. Spend the afternoon making the meal together, talking about the differences in food and nutrition between then and now. This is a great way to teach your kids about history, culture, and nutrition while having fun in the kitchen.
- Gratitude Boards: Create a gratitude collage with your kids, gathering pictures and words that represent the things you’re thankful for.
- Rainbow Experiments: Try out some rainbow experiments and talk about God’s promise of the rainbow. Check out my board for ideas! https://pin.it/5P1ytpAJN
- Games and Activities: Play games like “Go Fish” and talk about being “fishers of men.” You can also use this opportunity to talk about the miracle of the loaves and fishes, and how Jesus fed the crowds with just a few fish and some bread.
- Pully System: Make a pulley system with a bucket and talk about the woman at the well.
- Cup and String “Phones”: Create some cup and string “phones” and talk about spreading the gospel.
- Nature Exploration: Set up a nature exploration station with magnifying glasses, a microscope, and nature books. Collect items from nature, such as leaves, rocks, and feathers, and explore God’s creations together. This is a great way to teach your kids about the beauty and wonder of God’s creation.
- Bible Journaling: Start a Bible journaling practice with your kids and explore the Bible together.
- Prayer Journal Crafts: Make some prayer journal crafts and decorate the covers with your kids.
- Painting and Art: Get creative with paint and make some art inspired by biblical locations or stories.
Conclusion
Rainy days don’t have to be boring or screen filled. With a little creativity, you can turn a rainy day into a fun and faith-filled adventure with your kids. Try out some of these activities and see what works best for your family.
