Learning from the Littles: Trusting God Like They Trust Me

As I navigate the whirlwind world of motherhood with my three littles (2, 3, &4 yo), I’m constantly reminded of the non-stop nature of their needs. Every few minutes, someone needs something – a snack, a hug, a question answered, or a boo-boo taken care of. It’s exhausting, but it’s also a beautiful reflection of their trust and dependence on me.

As I strive to be patient and present for my little ones, I’m struck by the parallel between their relationship with me and our relationship with God. We often relegate our faith to a Sunday morning routine or occasional prayer, but what if we approached God with the same frequency and fervor as our toddlers approach us?

Jesus himself said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). And in Mark 10:15, he adds, “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Children aren’t afraid to ask for what they need, to express their emotions, or to seek comfort in times of uncertainty. They don’t worry about appearing needy or weak; they simply trust that their needs will be met. And that’s exactly how God wants us to approach him – with childlike faith, trust, and dependence.

As adults, we often try to project a sense of self-sufficiency, but the truth is, we need God just as much as our children need us. We need his guidance, his comfort, and his provision. And the good news is that God is always available, always listening, and always willing to meet our needs.

So let’s learn from our toddlers. Let’s bring our questions, our fears, and our needs to God throughout the day. Let’s pray without ceasing, and trust that he is always working everything out for our good. Let’s receive the kingdom of God like little children, with wonder, trust, and dependence.

In doing so, we’ll discover a deeper, more intimate relationship with God – one that’s marked by constant communication, unwavering trust, and unshakeable faith. And that’s a faith worth modeling for our children.
