I’m not sure what’s more surprising – that my husband’s trusty old truck finally kicked the bucket, or that I’m using it as a metaphor for spiritual growth. But here we are. I’m a sucker for finding God’s lessons in the unlikeliest of places, and this story’s no exception. In all seriousness, watching my husband come to terms with the truck’s demise got me thinking about how we often cling to what’s familiar, even when it’s time to let go. So, bear with me as I use this experience as a lesson about faith.
Sometimes we cling to things because they’re comfortable or familiar, even when they no longer serve us. My husband’s old pickup truck is a perfect example. After 300,000 miles and countless work hours, dings, and dirt, it’s a wonder it still runs. To him, it’s priceless, but in reality, its value lies in the memories and experiences they’ve shared.
I knew better than to suggest trading it in for a new one. But a few days ago, the truck’s final breath was audible – a screeching noise that sounded like nails on a chalkboard and a dying squirrel. My husband was optimistic, thinking a simple fix would get it running for another quarter million miles. But after a quick check with the reader machine, reality set in: the repair cost was double the truck’s worth.
He spent hours online searching for loopholes, but every video ended the same way – the truck would limp along for 30 minutes before needing to be towed home. There was no escaping the inevitable. It was a sad moment for him, even though a new truck would be a significant upgrade.
This experience reminded me of how we respond when God asks us to step out of our comfort zone. We often wish we could stay with the familiar, the trusted, and the reliable. It’s easy to see how staying put can seem like the easier option. But when we know God has called us to move forward, we can’t doubt. Sometimes, He may even take away our options, like with my husband’s truck.
Following the Holy Spirit and trusting in God’s plan leads to better things – similar to the situation with the new truck. It’s not always easy to see, but it’s worth it. Just as my husband will appreciate the reliability and upgrades of his new vehicle, we’ll find that God’s plan for us is far greater than what we left behind.
And that’s a wrap on this truck tale – thanks for rolling with it!
